Western Region netballers crowned state champions

Sharni Moloney was a member of the victorious Western Region under 15 netball squad.

WESTERN Region Netball’s 15 and under team came away premiers and champions from last weekend’s 2010 V/Line State Netball Titles.
The team of 12 players from across the region played 13 rounds plus two finals including the grand final over two days of competition which were contested in brilliant weather at Bendigo.
The games were two nine minute halves and all twelve players performed exceptionally well, handling the interchange rotation, as well as heat.
Showing calmness and steadiness for players of their age and great sportsmanship.
The 15 and under team played  seven rounds on Saturday  including a final pre-curser against Wimmera Mallee Region winning 13-10.
Sunday saw them face Dandenong Valley, winning 21-10 and Barwon where they scored a 20-14 victory.
The final four was Western, Barwon, Wimmera Mallee and Dandenong Valley.
Western defeated Dandenong Valley 19-9 in their semi final and Wimmera Mallee beat Barwon by two goals  to also qualify for the decider.
The final was skilled, controlled netball.
Western scored the opening nine goals of the match and three goals in the second half before Wimmera Mallee could get on the scoredboard.
The team coached by Chris Van Kempen and managed by Fran Bell ran out 17-3 winners.
Team members: Sarah Moroney (Port Fairy), Libby Steel (Cobden), Remeny McCann (Cobden), Sharni Moloney (Terang), Carre Sharp (Cobden), Jaymie Finch (Timboon), Sarah Bullen (Timboon), Angela Meade (Hampden), Rebecca Kelly (Hampden), Annie Blackburn (Hampden), Rachel Dobson (Koroit), Brittney Hyland (Hampden).
All three teams won their first round games.
The senior team played nine rounds finishing out of the four by a game and percentage.
The 17 and under team had 14 rounds over the weekend, winning four matches.
