New centre plans out to tender

Exciting times: Mortlake Information Centre’s Matt Wickham and Mortlake librarian Jackie Elliott are happy to see the plans for a new central hub are currently out to tender.

A NEW hub for Mortlake is on the way.

The Moyne Shire Council has announced the existing library and information centre will be demolished to make way for the new development.

Tenders for the new building are open until Monday, March 19.

The announcement follows a $500,000 State Government funding commitment through the Living Libraries Infrastructure program last March.

The council has allocated $300,000 towards the redevelopment, while the Mortlake Community Development Committee (MCDC) has contributed $50,000.

The new community centre will include library facilities, the Visitor Information Centre, Centrelink services, a separate community meeting space and a flexible activity area.

Shire mayor Mick Wolfe said the plans are the result of consultation between key community stakeholders, the Corangamite Regional Library Corporation and the MCDC.

“The input from the different groups has helped us tailor the final plans so that the library will be a real hub for the whole community,” he said.

“The new building will complement the upgraded streetscape and will be a welcoming place for visitors and locals alike.”

Final plans: The new Mortlake Hub plans include a multi-purpose room and a study research area.

MCDC secretary Kelvin Goodall said the plan approval is a positive move forward for the project.

“The plans appear to meet our initial requirements to provide a service to the Mortlake community,” he said.

Corangamite Regional Library Corporation chief executive officer Michael Scholtes said the new space will be “great for the community”.

“We’re pretty excited about the prospect of it being put up for tender,” he said.

“It will give us a significant increase in space.”

A separate meeting space will be available for after-hours bookings for meetings and group activities.

A study research area will also house a number of computers in the new space.

The building is to be set back slightly from the footpath and will feature a forecourt area for informal gatherings and street activities.

Council will provide temporary alternative accommodation for the library and information centre services during construction.
