Bowlers perform at South West Challenge

THE annual South West Challenge once again saw some of Heytesbury’s best indoor bowlers pit themselves against the Warrnambool association for the year’s bragging rights.

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts last Sunday, Heytesbury failed to take the win and didn’t go back-to-back.

Special mention to Heytesbury Open Pairs runners-up Pam Wines and Lara Mungean, open triples section one runners-up Gary Body, Louise Blair and Lois Johnston, and open triples section two runners-up Les Pearson, Max Wines and Sophie Pearson.

Next year’s challenge will be held at Simpson – thank you to Warrnambool for hosting the event.

In pennant action, Laang-Ecklin hosted Glenormiston 1 in division one.

The match started evenly with four shots each in the first five ends.

It was Glenormiston who kept up the pressure to take the win 23-13.

Cobden 1 started its home match off strongly against Timboon Lawn 1 and despite a consistent effort from the visitors, Cobden 1 took the win, 30-12.

Camperdown 1 travelled to take on Timboon Lawn 2 and started strong, picking up 11 shots to the home team’s five in the first half of the match.

But that’s where the party stopped for Camperdown, with Timboon Lawn picking up 16 shots over the next seven ends to run out winners, 21-16.

Round out division one, Camperdown 2 hosted Mepunga 1 in what was a fairly even match.

Camperdown 2 defeated Mepunga 1, 18-14.

The top four in division one are Glenormiston 1, Mepunga 1, Timboon Lawn 2 and Cobden 1.

In division two, Mepunga 3 hosted Cobden 2 and the game started off fairly evenly with three shots each in the first four ends.

The home side picked up seven shots in the following 10 ends before the visitors stopped the run with three shots to trail by four.

In the end, Mepunga 3 defeated Cobden 2, 21-10.

Mepunga 2 started well in its away match to Glenormiston 2, picking up nine strong shots.

However, by end 15 both sides fought hard and the score was locked at 14-all with three ends to play.

Mepunga 1 held on for the win, 24-15.

Scotts Creek 1 hosted Glenormiston 2 and the visitors came out strong and kept going to win, 27-12.

In the final division two match, Timboon Lawn 3 hosted Simpson 1 in what was a hard-fought close match, with the scores level at 11 all at the end of play.

The top four in division two are Mepunga 3, Glenormiston 2, Mepunga 2 and Cobden 2.

Division three saw Mepunga 4 and Scotts Creek 2 battle it out for the win, with the home side prevailing 24-11.

In another close fought game, home side Cobden 3 defeated Peterborough 18-10.

The top four in division three are Mepunga 4, Cobden 3, Scotts Creek 2 and Peterborough.

The Ballarat Intergroup Side for Heytesbury will be announced one the team is finalised.
