Brigades unite to help community prepare
COUNTRY Fire Authority (CFA) brigades have begun opening their doors to helps residents prepare for what is projected to be a concerning fire season.

The CFA began its Get Fire Ready events over the weekend, with brigades across the state opening to help residents learn more about preparing their property for fire season, understanding fire danger and emergency information and creating a Bushfire Survival Plan.
Amongst the CFA brigades to open their doors was the Cobrico CFA brigade.
Brigade captain Gavin Mulholland said he enjoyed the opportunity to connect with residents and answer questions.
“It’s good to get more people engaged with the CFA,” he said.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to meet with people and potentially get more members, but it’s also good to get people more aware of the need to prepare for fire season.
“It is good to be able to meet with people.
“Especially for a small place like Cobrico, which is a public hall and the CFA station and that’s it.
“We only had a few people come along but it is something we know that while this might not be the best year, if it’s something you can keep rolling you might see more people come in years ahead.”
The Cobrico CFA brigade and its 15 members is among those tasked with the protection of rural communities heading into what has been raised as a potentially dangerous fire season.
Mr Mulholland said recent rainfall was creating growth and plenty of green grass, but the ongoing drought conditions meant growth being experienced now would quickly dry out in summer.
“The issue with green now is that if the ground is already dry, it won’t stay green for long,” he said.
“The extra growth can lead to hassles.
“What we do know is that even in the most danger fire seasons, if the match doesn’t strike then it doesn’t go up.
“We all have to be vigilant, be prepared and hope for the best.”
Mr Mulholland urged residents to visit the CFA website to learn more about preparing for a challenging fire season.
“Have a look at the CFA website, where you can find all the information you need to prepare,” he said.
“The most important thing is to keep around your house clear.
“Just tidy up the leaves and clear overgrown trees.”
Get Fire Ready events will continue to be held over the coming weeks.
