Courthouse volunteer shares joy of volunteering
A VOLUNTEER at the Camperdown Courthouse is encouraging anyone who has a love of sharing local knowledge to put their hand up to volunteer.
As part of National Volunteer Week, a Camperdown Courthouse volunteer is encouraging residents to make this their year to lend a helping hand.
Caroline Monteith is a proud volunteer at the Courthouse, saying she had wanted to do something for the community after retiring from nursing.
“The Courthouse was quite appealing because it’s such a lovely venue there and I like the idea of getting involved with tourism in the town,” she said.
“We’ve got such a lovely town to showcase, so I thought it would be interesting.
“I happened to see the girls at the Camperdown Show at their stand, and I went up and volunteered from there.
“It’s an interesting job because you meet a lot of visitors travelling through, so you’re always meeting new people, and it’s great to be able to give them some information and help them enjoy their holiday while they’re passing through town.
“They’re a fabulous group to work with – I’ve made some lovely friends there. It’s a beautiful venue to work in and I think we’re very fortunate.”
Ms Monteith said she enjoys her afternoon shifts at the Courthouse, working surrounded by locally-produced goods, having the opportunity to meet new people and talking to her fellow volunteers when taking over their shifts.
“I just enjoy meeting new people as they’re travelling through – we get overseas visitors as well, and it’s great to feel as though you’ve got a purpose and giving great information about our lovely town,” she said.
Ms Monteith said the Camperdown Courthouse was always looking for new volunteers to put their hands up.
“I would 100 per cent recommend it,” she said.
“I think they’ll get so much out of it.
“It’s a learning thing for us as well – we give out a lot of local knowledge, but we learn lots of new things as well.
“The shire gave us a grant last year, and we travelled through the region to learn more about the region ourselves, so we can give first-hand information to all our visitors.
“They’re a great group of people to work with.”
