Cr Makin named RCV’s new deputy chair
CORANGAMITE Shire councillor Kate Makin has been tasked with helping to shape the future of regional Victoria as part of a prestigious body representing Victoria’s rural local government areas.

She was recently elected as the new deputy chair of Rural Councils
Victoria (RCV), a peak body representing rural councils across the state.
Cr Makin has been elected to the role over a two-year period alongside Cr Rob Amos as chair.
The RCV represents communities across the state’s 33 rural council areas, with around 11 per cent of Victorians living within one of the rural council areas which cover 79 per cent of Victoria’s land area.
RCV committees work with government ministers, bureaucrats and elected representatives across a range of advocacy areas including making Parliamentary submissions or other inquiry processes and contributing feedback to budget proposals at both state and federal levels.
“We get a chance to voice what is needed as we understand it’s different in rural areas to metropolitan areas,” Cr Makin said.
“I’m feeling excited about being able to represent the views of rural Victoria to both the State and Federal Parliament.”
RCV supports and promotes sustainable, livable, prosperous rural communities as populations spread over a large area often makes it difficult for rural councils to raise money and meet the needs of their communities.
“I just hope to achieve livable rural communities, a strong rural council and to be the voice for all rural Victorians,” Cr Makin said.
The RCV is governed by a committee comprising two representatives from each local government region.
For each region, one representative is an elected councillor, and the other is a council officer.
Colac Otway Shire Council chief executive officer Anne Howard is representing the rural south west region alongside Cr Makin.
