As a part of their Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) curriculum, Later Years students must coordinate and run an activity to demonstrate leadership skills.

Later Years teacher Tegan Nelmes said she thought Do It For Dolly Day was a great opportunity to combine learning about Dolly’s Dream with ticking off an important assessment task on Monday.

Dolly’s Dream is a national anti-bullying incentive committed to changing the culture of bullying and addressing the impact of bullying through education.

“The students have chosen things that they find calming themselves, so we’ve got some doing colouring, we’ve got others doing some drawing, and one student is doing beading because she likes to bead,” she said.

“A couple of other students have found things they thought the younger students might be more interested in, just doing some general craft activities.

“We tried to make it inclusive for everybody – some of the kids just like to listen to music so instead of just having their choice of music they’ve opted for Smiling Mind so they could listen to calming meditation.

“Prior to this, students made self-care kits, so they went onto Kmart and chose some sensory toys to help calm themselves, some shampoo and conditioner, everything that they might need to be prepared and functional physically for a situation they might be unfamiliar with.

“From that they’ve then taken the thought of self-care and came up with these activities.”

VPC student Kaleb Hampden said he chose colouring as his activity, which is something he likes to do sometimes, depending on his mood.

“I’ve organised colouring in butterflies for Do It For Dolly Day,” he said.

“I decided to do colouring in to calm down.

“Colouring in is actually my favourite thing to do when I’m in an upset mood.”

The students took turns placing blue hand prints on a Do It For Dolly banner in between rotating through the various activities on offer.
