Important win for Magpies

CAMPERDOWN has claimed the scalp of another senior football finals contender with an eight point win over Portland at Hanlon Park.

The 12.7.79 to 10.11.71 win over sixth-placed Portland sees the seventh-placed Magpies a game and a half out of the five with two rounds to play.

“It was a really good result,” a pleased Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.

“A win on the road against Portland is always a good tough win.”

The Magpies made a strong start, kicking six goals to four in the opening term.

“We got out of the blocks pretty well,” Thomas said.

“We had the scoring end in the first quarter but we also had good control early on.”

After leading by 22 points at half-time, Camperdown extended its lead to 29 points at the last change.

The home team finished strongly in the final quarter, but never got closer than eight points.

“It was one of those games where it felt like it was ours to lose.

“Portland rolled the dice in the last quarter but our system held up, we were comfortable in getting the result all the way through.”

Thomas praised runners Cameron Spence, Hamish Sinnott and Zach Sinnott for their games – “they were fantastic through the midfield as always.”

Angus Gordon was in the best, putting in a strong performance in the ruck.

“Angus was so valuable in the ruck, primarily competing against one of the competition’s best ruckmen in Ben Malcolm.

“He took on Malcolm well and really nullified his influence.”

Josh Place continues to be a big contributor for the Magpies.

“Josh was rock solid down back, his defensive pressure was great and he was our primary rebounder out of the backline.”

Charlie Lucas led the possessions for Camperdown with 29, with Spence gathering 28, Hamish Sinnott 28, Zach Sinnott 21 and Harry Sumner 20.

Tomorrow Camperdown host Cobden at Leura Oval.

“Cobden beat us well last time and have been getting some really good scalps.

“We want to put up a good showing and continue to grow and evolve each week.”

South Warrnambool had a big 103 point win in the reserves, 19.10.124 to 3.3.21.

Tim Fitzgerald, Jake Clissold, Luke Ball, Xavier Warren, Eddie Lucas and Jack Heanly were best for Camperdown, with Tarkyn Love kicking two goals.

Portland got the win in the under 18s, 10.15.75 to 5.2.32.

Albie Cheeseman, Paddy Hassett and Max Rees, on his under 18 debut, were best for the under 18 Magpies.

Camperdown took the points in the Open netball match with a 53-47 win.

The win for the fifth-placed Magpies was vital, putting them two wins and percentage ahead of sixth placed Portland.

“It was a great contest, they gave us a really good run,” Camperdown coach Jill Leader said.

Camperdown led by nine goals at half time, Portland reducing that to four by the final change.

“Portland was on fire in the third and played with a real intensity,” Leader said.

“We had to really settle and play controlled netball in the last quarter.”

Rosie Pickles and Sophie Conheady were best for Camperdown.

“Rosie was really strong with her defensive plays, Sophie controlled the tempo when it was needed and always displayed calmness.

“Annaliese Hughes was solid in defence, while Piper Stephens had an outstanding first half.”

Goal attack Stephens scored 24 goals, with goal shooter Nell Mitchell scoring 29.

A big game awaits against fourth-placed Cobden this week.

The Bombers scored a 68-52 win the last time the two teams met.

“We didn’t start well against Cobden last time, it took a while to adjust to their speed.

“Our focus will be on being ready to go for the first five minutes.”

The division one netball saw Portland score a 37-30 win.

Chloe O'Brien, Kiara Love and Isobel Sinnott were Camperdown’s best, with Love scoring 19 goals and Georgia Oates 11.

Portland also got the points in the division two game with a 58-23 win.
