Lane closed – but where’s the works?

RESIDENTS of Derrinallum and Lismore are calling for action after a section of the Camperdown-Lismore Road saw one lane closed off due to poor road condition.

Traffic lights and temporary bollards were set up at the Kariah section of the road recently, closing off around 250m of one lane.

According to the VicTraffic website, the traffic controls were established around September 30 between the intersections of Elwood Road and East Hill Road to the intersection of Milangil Estate Road and Mount Myrtoon Lane.

However, there have been no visible signs of works commencing on that section.

Lismore resident Tanya Leech said the lane closure has missed potholes on either side, forcing residents to drive on poor patches of road.

“The other side of the road is just as bad, so what’s the point of the traffic lights,” she said.

“You nearly need to drive in the middle of the road.

“I don’t get the traffic lights – they’re pushing you through the other side of the road, which they’re not repairing either.

“It’s disappointing it’s gone from just being 40km/h signs to traffic lights to nothing happening.”

Prior to the traffic lights being set up, the section of road was reduced to 40km/h and allowed drivers to dodge potholes with ease.

Derrinallum resident Stephen McCann said there are concerns the increased traffic on one lane will lead to the deterioration of the open lane heading towards Derrinallum and Lismore.

Torn up: A stretch of around 250 metres has been closed off due to the deterioration of road condition.

The road sees high levels of traffic as it is the main connection road for Camperdown, Derrinallum and Lismore as well as the preferred route for Fonterra trucks heading from Cobden to Ballarat.

“They’ll ruin the other half of the road and have to shut the whole thing down, but they can’t do that,” Mr McCann said.

“It’s poor maintenance and a lack of care from the State Government.

“We wish they did more maintenance more often.

“We pay enough tax for it – they can’t spend it all on the rail lines in Melbourne. It’s not going to help us here.

“We want the State Government to start to do something about it, but it should have been fixed a long time ago – before it got bad enough to cut the road off.”

Ms Leech said she fears there would be no repairs done in the near future, particularly as the region prepares for harvest season.

“What date are they putting on for repairs,” she said.

“How long are we going to have to put up with it?

“We’ve got school buses using that road and we’ve got harvest coming up – there’ll be more trucks on that road.”

Western District Newspapers approached the Department of Transport and Planning with questions around when the traffic controls were put in place, whether works are scheduled, and how long the controls are expected to remain in place.

A Department media spokesperson said crews regularly monitor road conditions along the Camperdown-Lismore Road and complete necessary repairs.
