Lights response for a cause

TIMBOON Fire Brigade will hit the streets with flashing lights to raise money for this year’s Good Friday Appeal.

The Timboon Fire Brigade is set to continue its long-standing tradition of assisting with the town’s Good Friday Appeal when its band of volunteers load up to shake tins this Friday, April 18.

Timboon Fire Brigade secretary Howard Meek said the opportunity to throw their support behind the Good Friday Appeal was always a highlight for volunteers.

“We’ve been doing same thing for around 30 years,” he said.

“We have 20 volunteers around the town and we also try to get out to some of the local farms.

“We take out our Country Fire Authority tanker and a smaller pumper and knock on doors, with the lights running because the kids love to see it.

“We normally are finished by around 2pm and we take the proceeds to the golf club, which serves as a central collection hub.

“Each year we fan out to try and cover most streets, as many areas as we can, and we would typically raise around $4500.”

Timboon Fire Brigade has taken to social media over the past week to share the stories of those who have benefitted from the services provided by the Royal Children’s Hospital and those who have generously given up their time to shake the tins on the day to help raise funds.

The brigade shared the story of Hugo Riedl from Port Campbell who in 2023 was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, which required months of treatment and more than 30 theatre procedures.

The brigade also shared the story of Timboon’s Sarah Cook and her sons, Menzel and Nelson, who have served as volunteers over the past few years.

Mr Meek said being able to showcase what makes the Good Friday Appeal so special, and how it has provided comfort and support to south west Victorians, was a positive.

“I think everybody knows the story of the Royal Children’s Hospital and are keen to dig deep to support it,” he said.

“Everybody knows some who has been to the children’s hospital.

“As a grandfather we’ve had kids and grandkids go through hospital.

“The Royal Children’s Hospital is an institution of Victoria and people are happy to be involved.”
