Magpies battle in the mud

ROUND 14 of the Hampden League senior football competition saw Camperdown go down to third placed Koroit by 11 points.

The low scoring tussle was played in horrendously muddy conditions at Koroit’s Victoria Park, with the home team running out 4.8.32 to 3.3.21 winners.

“It was one of those games where we were right in with them, we were real stiff,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.

“We had our opportunities and they capitalised on a couple of opportunities.

“We missed an opportunity and in such a low-scoring game, that was the game.”

The extremely muddy conditions made it hard for spectators and coaches alike.

“There were quite a few times, especially in that last quarter, where I was getting frustrated at guys who weren’t in the right position but then it wasn’t until the player got the ball and kicked it our way that I realised he was actually our player,” Thomas laughed.

“But from a player perspective and a spectator perspective, I don’t know it’s great for the game to be playing in those conditions.”

Thomas, who was announced late last week as finishing up as Camperdown coach at the end of the 2026 season, was pleased with the effort his team put in on the day.

“The boys competed hard, make no mistake Koroit are a top three team for a reason, and they were certainly out to prove a point.

“Our guys did well, competed hard, looking at where they’re at and where we’re at, we certainly gave ourselves the best chance, the best opportunity.”

Luke O’Neil was best for Camperdown in the loss.

“Luke was rock solid down back, he played on the last line of defence and repelled a heap of the footy.”

Zach Sinnott led Camperdown’s disposal getters with 25, Myles Sinnott had 24, O’Neil 23 with Jonty Lafferty getting 20.

Tom Baker was the only multiple goal scorer from either side in the match, kicking two.

“Tommy was clearly the cleanest player out there, just in terms of his ability to create something from nothing.

“Koroit has some serious goal threats, I felt Tommy looked really dangerous up forward and was probably the most threatening forward out of anyone out there on both sides.”

Tomorrow Camperdown head to the Friendlies Society Park to play South Warrnambool.

“South have hit some good form of late and are playing some really good footy so they’re going to be a tough opposition that’s for sure.”

The reserves match saw Koroit score a 9.2.56 to 1.5.11 win.

Issac Fowler, Hugh Gordon and Jack Heanly were Camperdown’s best in the loss, with Nick Jones kicking the only goal.

Koroit had a 10.19.79 to 0.0.0 win in the under 18s.

Sam McConachy, Rory Cameron and Harvey Roberts were best for the under 18 Magpies.

The final round of the under 16 football saw Koroit score a 7.4.46 to 3.4.22 win.

Best in the loss for the Magpies were Alex Huggins, Ethan Shadforth and Miller Lockhart, with Josh Finlayson kicking two goals and Bayden Ward one.

The under 16 Magpies finished the home and away season in fourth place and play Koroit again in this Sunday’s elimination final at the Leura Oval.

The under 14 game saw Koroit record a 2.4.16 to 0.4.4 win.

Vincent Titmus, Harry Sinnott and Elaine Ryan were best for Camperdown.
