Magpies off to a flying start

CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers came away from their round four Hampden League match against Warrnambool with a 26 point loss.

Kicking with the wind in the first quarter at the Reid Oval, the Magpies got off to a flying start, kicking seven goals to none in the first quarter.

Warrnambool took control after that to run out winners 11.17.83 to 8.9.57.

“We were actually happy with both our first and second quarters, we felt it was at least a five goal breeze, so to kick seven goals and hold Warrnambool to four in the second, we felt like we played the game well up until that point,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.

“After half-time Warrnambool, to their credit, their intensity nudged up and I guess we started to play as if the breeze was going to do the kicking for us in that third quarter.”

Injuries to key players didn’t help.

“We lost Zach Sinnott at the tail end of the first quarter with a hamstring, then Cameron Spence and Griff Dwyer in the third which made it hard.

“We do feel that we’re competitive, but on the same token, we still have to find ways to compete for four quarters to really take it beyond just being competitive and to actually get some of the results working our way.”

Best for the Magpies in the loss was Angus Gordon.

“Gus has really found his feet down back, in the time I’ve been there, he’s played predominantly forward, but has had a lot of junior experience down back.

“He’s now slotted in nicely down back and created a bit of freedom for a few of our other boys, it’s given us a bit of flexibility which we’ve needed and in doing so, he’s seeing a lot of it and getting a lot of intercepts.”

Another to impress Thomas was Jonty Lafferty, who in addition to his 18 disposals, laid 10 tackles.

“Laff’s having a breakout year, throughout the pre-season, even last year, he was showing signs of what he could potentially do.

“He put in a solid pre-season, all the signs for us were that he was going to have a bit of a breakout year, which is exciting for him because he’s leading our clearances, he’s got great two-way pressure, not only is he great on the inside, but he’s also fantastic at getting the ball on the outside as well.”

Matthew Field led Camperdown’s possession getters with 31 ahead of a milestone game this week.

“Matty accumulates, he plays that wing role really probably as good as anyone in the league, he just knows how to find space and provide that integral connection piece between the lines.

“He did really well, he has a milestone game coming up with his 150th this week, which is quite an accomplishment as well.”

Tomorrow Camperdown host Koroit at the Leura Oval.

“Koroit play a very competitive brand of footy, they’ve got that, that real grit, they love the scrap and making it an arm wrestle.

“It’s a really good opportunity for our boys to build out that four-quarter pressure, if we can match them for pressure around the ball we’re in with a strong chance.”

The reserves match saw Warrnambool score a 16.11.107 to 1.6.12 win.

Paddy Baker, Solly Mahony and Luke Bone were Camperdown’s best, with Xavier O’Connor kicking the lone goal.

Warrnambool had a 135-point win in the under 18s, 23.8.146 to 1.5.11.

Archie Walker, Elijah Thomas and Zackary Regan were best for the under 18 Magpies, with Walker kicking the goal.

Warrnambool got the win in the under 16s, 15.8.98 to 4.6.30.

Jonty Raven, George Sadler, Bayden Ward and Max Rees were best for Camperdown in the loss, with Miller Lockhart kicking two goals.

Warrnambool also got the points in the under 14 football, 8.11.59 to 2.3.15.

Darby Sinnott kicked two goals and was named as best along with Parker Lockhart, Vincent Titmus and Beau Smith.

The Blues had a 15 point win in the under 12 football, 5.6.36 to 3.3.21.
