The Magpies, down by nine points at three-quarter time, kept the visitors scoreless in the last quarter, kicking two goals in the last minute to win the game.

Camperdown’s 5.8.38 to 4.8.32 win was played in wet, muddy conditions.

“It was a good old fashioned slog, a real arm wrestle,” Magpie coach Clinton Thomas said.

“The conditions certainly did not allow for a clean brand of footy.”

Thomas was particularly pleased with how Camperdown finished the game, kicking three goals to none in the last term.

“It was fantastic how well we ran out the game in the heavy conditions,” he said.

“I felt we had all the momentum in the last quarter, we aggressively hunted the ball.”

Luke O’Neil was named as best for Camperdown, racking up 29 disposals including 25 kicks.

“Luke had a great game, he was fantastic as part of our back six.

“He rebounded and repelled incredibly well.”

Hamish Sinnott (22 disposals and eight tackles) and Zach Sinnott (30 disposals and 13 tackles) were also praised by their coach.

“Hamish was just so clean despite the conditions, he’s a class act.

“Zach played a bullocking, hard working game, he was very important.”

Hamish kicked two goals and Zach one, with Billy Arnold and Bayley Thompson Camperdown’s other goal kickers in the low scoring game.

Other Magpies to get over 20 possessions were Matthew Field (28), James O’Neil (27), Harry Sumner (26), Josh Place (23), Charlie Lucas (23), Fraser Lucas (22) and Riley Arnold (21).

“The reality is that the boys have been thoroughly competitive all season, we’ve just had these mini collapses where the opposition scores quickly and gets a run on,” Thomas said.

“It was pleasing that we had the mindset on Saturday to not let that happen, we wanted the win and played four full quarters.”

Camperdown has this Saturday off for the first week of the split round, resuming on August 9 against South Warrnambool at Leura Oval.

Camperdown scored a third win of the reserves season with a 5.5.35 to 4.7.31 victory.

Tarkyn Love kicked four goals and was the Magpies best for the second week in a row, with Isaac McVilly, Eddie Lucas, Jacan Brooks and 100 game player Jake Clissold also in the best.

Blair O’Leary, Theo Cheeseman and Patrick Hassett were best for the junior Magpies, with Lewie West kicking the lone goal.

Warrnambool took the points in the Open netball match 56-48.

“We gave them a head start,” lamented Magpie coach Jill Leader of the 20-11 first quarter in the Blues favour.

“We were good early, but in that second half of the first quarter we just couldn’t get it past our attacking transverse line.”

The conditions made attacking netball difficult.

“The weather really slowed the game down and made it tough for scoring.”

Down by 13 goals at three quarter time, the Magpies outscored the Blues 16 goals to 11 in the last term.

“We threw everything at them in the last quarter, it was a good effort to get back within eight goals.”

Annaliese Hughes was best for the Magpies.

“Annaliese played really well on (Warrnambool goal shooter) Eva Ryan, she kept Eva’s scoring to within reason where we wanted it.

“She intercepted well, and was steady; a wall in defence.”

Elsie Sinnott and Nell Mitchell were also in the Magpies best.

“Elsie did a great job in both wing defence and goal defence roles, she’s so quick and agile.

“Nell provides a great target, she shot well in the conditions.”

Mitchell scored 29 goals, with Piper Stephens scoring 17.

“Piper sat out the first quarter due to other netball commitments, she came on and had a real impact in the last three quarters.”

The division one netball saw Camperdown score a 33-20 win.
