Mini golf sees undercover upgrade

A NEW upgrade has taken the Cobden Rotary mini golf to the next level, providing cover from both the sun and rain in the canteen area.

Revamped: The Cobden Rotary mini golf has put up a new all-weather undercover area, protecting golfers from both the sun and rain.

Where there used to be shade sails is now a fully constructed all-weather undercover area which has been weeks in the making.

Cobden Rotary treasurer Frank Martin said the upgrade was a long-time coming.

“We took down the shade sails that we had which were getting old and mouldy and collected water and didn’t necessarily stop as much sun as we wanted,” he said.

“Now we’ve got a permanent covered area which will keep people dry on Sundays – they can come in here and keep dry.

“They can sit in here in summer in the shade and sip on a cup of tea or a soft drink.

“It’s an all-weather cover, whereas before we had a largely ineffective set of shade sails which helped keep people sun smart in the summer but didn’t do anything if they sat under it in rain – they’d get dripped on.

“After rain, we’d still be getting dripped on for the next three hours – the shade sails collected the water.”

Mr Martin said the construction of the cover was made possible thanks to the work of volunteers, local trades from the area and grants received from Corangamite Shire Council and the community bank.

“We got a grant from council and we got a grant from the community bank,” he said.

“It was put up largely by volunteers from the Rotary club and friends of the club.

“We had building supervision from Mark Roberts at Roberts Builders and had to get a plumber to put the roof on so McQuinns did that for us.

“We involved local trades to help us get it in place.”

Mr Martin also thanked the hard work of Rotary Club member Neil Podger and his son, who put in many dedicated hours towards the construction of the undercover area.

With construction complete, the area can now be enjoyed by mini golfers on the third Sunday of each month, every Sunday of the school holidays or by special appointment.
