Around 50 people attended the event, which saw a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country delivered by Kirrae Whurrung man Brett Clarke.

Mt Leura and Mt Sugarloaf Management Committee secretary Fran Grundy said the age range was “lovely”, since the event coincided with school holidays beginning.

“Once again, Brett Clarke and his family did a fantastic job of Welcome to Country and an explanation of the connection between Mt Leura and the Djargurd Wurrung people,” she said.

“We also did a sing-along as well.

“There’s always a really positive vibe, regardless of the weather – the fact that the sun was shining made it really good, but it’s a really lovely way of connecting locals with a very significant location.

“This is our eighth one, and we attract different people every year.

“It gives people a deeper understanding of the First Nation’s significance in our local area and helps to build that reconciliation. That’s really important.”
