Optimism follows sold out performances
A SLEW of sold out performances has strengthened optimism a vibrant future awaits theatrical productions in Terang.
The Terang Theatre Troupe’s latest run of shows for ‘Letters to Lindy’ proved a success, with all six shows officially selling out every seat.
Rave reviews from attendees and growing confidence of troupe members has fostered a reinvigorated belief among members surrounding the capabilities of the group, and the trajectory for what could be achieved.
Terang Theatre Troupe’s Rosemary Knight said an “army of supporters from Colac, Cobden, Timboon, Camperdown and Warrnambool” was behind the success of the production.
“Terang has a burgeoning reputation for bringing fine theatre to the area,” she said.
“Over eight weeks a group of nine committed performers drilled down into this complex and contentious story, under the direction of visiting professional director Terence O’Connell.
“It captures both the story of the dingo that took Lindy Chamberlain’s baby, Azaria, as well as the years of abuse, support and challenge Lindy and her family suffered.
“The play was adroitly designed, appropriately, in the old courthouse in Terang, to show how more than 20,000 letters that Lindy received interpret the sympathy and hate she absorbed.”
Ms Knight, who played the titular role of Lindy, said it was challenging to delve in to the character of the woman who became the face of one of Australia’s highest profile murder trials, and subsequent exonerations.
“It is definitely the most difficult role I have played, with painful nuances and subtle narrative exchanges aching to be expressed every minute,” she said.
Terang Theatre Troupe’s Victor Reid, who played multiple roles in the performance as well as being associate director, said he had been blown away by the abilities of troupe members.
He said the performance had been so well received, the Terang Theatre Troupe began fielding inquiries from budding thespians hoping to get involved in whatever project comes next.
“The cast was terrific,” Mr Reid said.
“It has been fantastic to see the growth Terence has been able to bring out of everyone.
“Both our experienced actors and those who were treading the boards for their first time have appreciated his guiding hand.
“The engaged audiences and the environment of the Old Terang Courthouse have buoyed us all, and we are delighted to be receiving inquiries from actors who wish to perform with us in the future.”
Ms Knight said she was excited for the prospect of the Terang Theatre Troupe growing its numbers, with plenty of opportunities awaiting those wanting to get involved.
“We have seen more emerging talent and backstage assistance stepping forward, which is a thrill and a triumph,” she said.
“There is always room for more players front and back stage, costuming, prompting, lights; you name it.
“No experience is necessary – we place far more value on keen incentive, dedication and enthusiasm for the theatre.”
