President Don Trealor congratulated Cheryl Ham on her Citizen Award from the Corangamite Shire.

President Don also inducted new member Betty McLean who was proposed by Judy Blackburn.

Members are heading to Poynton’s Nursery at Aberfeldie, the first outing for the year.

The trip starts with a train journey from Terang Station to Southern Cross Station, Melbourne followed by a tram ride to catch a tram boat which travels up the Maribyrnong River passed Flemington racecourse to arrive at Aberfeldie and ends with a two-minute walk to the acclaimed nursery.

Lunch and morning tea are included in the outing.

Members then return to Southern Cross station for their journey to Terang.

Members are looking forward to this day out.

A day trip is proposed for an outing to Keayang Maar Winery on Wednesday, March 20 for lunch.

Guest speaker was Donna Edge from Taroon, daughter of Probus member Rosalie Edge, who spoke on various areas of her life starting with growing up on the family farm in McConnel’s Road. Donna ‘s interest in dairy cows led her to study at Dookie College and on returning to the farm she incorporated overseas trips to further her interest and knowledge of dairy cows.

Whilst in England she traced the history of the Edge family which had begun with a pottery business in the area of Stoke on Trent.

Donna displayed some original pieces made by the Edge family.

In the late nineteenth century Davis Edge migrated to Australia and managed Jancourt Station. Joseph Edge, son of Davis, was a very successful cross-country jockey winning a Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington on several occasions.

Joseph sold his racing set up in Melbourne and purchased land between Allansford and Wangoon. Subsequently, the Edge’s moved to Taroon where Harry, son of Joe and grandfather of Donna ran a dairy farm.

Joan Cain thanked Donna for her interesting presentation.

Members are looking forward to the 20th anniversary of the formation of the Terang and District Probus Club in April this year.

New members are most welcome and can contact the secretary Gerdy McCormack on 0429 351 466.

Alternatively, meetings are held on the first Monday of each month and any members of the public are welcome to attend and see what a great organization Probus is.
