Sit and sew this weekend

COMING back from a quilting retreat held three times a year, Cobden resident Helen Smith is still keen to keep sewing with another event lined up this weekend.

Mrs Smith said she holds a quilting retreat in Port Fairy during April, July and September each year for a fun getaway dedicated to the craft.

“It’s a group of women and they just bring whatever they’re working on and work on that for the weekend,” she said.

“It’s good, you just go over there, have fun and socialise.

“We stay at Southcombe Caravan Park – they’ve got a big lodge there.

“We stay in there and they have a huge room and it’s nice and warm.

“I always book it until Monday so you don’t have to pack up early Sunday afternoon and go home and you get more work done.”

This past weekend Mrs Smith said there were 13 in attendance at the retreat and they weren’t only working on quilts.

“There were three from Casterton, a few from Cobden, some Colac and the Warrnambool area,” she said.

“The same ones put their names down, but there were a couple of new ones this time.

“There were a couple of knitters and a couple of embroiderers there too.

“Some of them take their embroidery machines and do machine embroidery as well.”

Wanting to keep the good times rolling, Mrs Smith has organised for a sit and sew to take place this Sunday at the senior citizen’s hall in Cobden.

“I’ve organised a sit and sew, or knit, whatever craft you want to bring that you do, or just come and sit and talk, it doesn’t matter,” she said.

“There’s an entry fee of $20 and that will get you both morning and afternoon tea and a lucky door entry prize ticket.

“The money that we raise from it goes to the Victorian Quilters, who then deposit it into a cancer research account.”

The day will run from 10am-4pm and bookings are essential.
