Slow start costly for Tigers
A SLOW start proved costly for Woorndoo/Mortlake, going down to Glenthompson/Dunkeld by 22 points in the round 11 senior football match at Dunkeld.
Glenthompson/Dunkeld got off to a flyer, kicking five goals in the first quarter while keeping the Tigers scoreless.
Woorndoo/Mortlake more than matched the home team for the rest of the game, but struggled to bridge the gap, with the Rams winning 12.14.86 to 9.10.64.
Co-captain Thomas Gough, William Templeton and Otto Opperman were best for the Tigers.
Jack Spokes was Woorndoo/Mortlake’s only multiple goal kicker with two.
With the league bye this week, Woorndoo/Mortlake’s next fixture is an away game at Tatyoon on July 19.
In the reserves, Glenthompson/Dunkeld scored a comfortable 94 point win, 20.8.128 to 5.4.34.
Harry Wills, Chris Crawley and Charlie Carmody were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake, with Jason Wardlaw and Rhys Casson kicking a goal each.
The under 16.5 game saw Glenthompson/Dunkeld score a 17.12.114 to no score win.
Elijah Bradbury, Sam Mahncke and Zachary Dolling were the best for the junior Tigers.
Another close game for the Woorndoo/Mortlake A grade netballers, the Tigers going down 34-32.
“We were so, so close," lamented Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Bec Rohan.
“We played so well in the second half, but the pressure got us in the end.”
Down by five goals at half-time, Rohan was pleased with how her team fought back.
“Our third quarter was really good, we played fantastic netball to get back to being level at three quarter time.”
Rohan was impressed with her opponents.
“Glenthompson/Dunkeld are a really good team.
“The top six are all really strong, it’s really good for the league to have this standard of teams.”
She rated goal shooter Brooke Richardson, who scored a match high 22 goals, as best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
“Brooke continues to really stand up for us,” Rohan said.
“She was going to retire at the end of last season so it’s great to have her and her family still around, they are such a big part of the club.”
Rohan also praised goal defence Mia Richie for her game.
“Mia stood up and provided great pressure in defence.”
Rohan said this week’s bye round had come at the right time for her team.
“We’ve had some sickness and a few injuries, it will be nice to rest up for a week.
“Tatyoon away is our next game, they’re always a big test, it’s a game we want to be ready for and win.”
The B grade game saw a 38-25 win to Glenthompson/Dunkeld.
Lily Schuuring led the scoring for Woorndoo/Mortlake with 14 goals, with centre Alison Greig the Tigers best.
Glenthompson/Dunkeld had a strong 37-17 win in the C grade netball.
Taylah Rohan scored 11 goals, with defender Ella Jones named as the Tigers best.
The 18 and under match saw a 42-22 win to Glenthompson/Dunkeld.
Bella Wardlaw was named best for Woorndoo/Mortlake, with Ava Wardlaw shooting 15 goals.
Glenthompson/Dunkeld had a 38-34 win in the 15 and under netball.
Natalie Krepp scored 21 goals and Indi Wardlaw 13, with Ashlee Killen best for the Tigers.
Glenthompson also won the 13 and under game with a 30-21 scoreline, Arya Bourchier and Rekiah Martin best for the junior Tigers.
