Smith takes gold in China
LOCAL shooting sensation Penny Smith has struck gold once again.

Smith and fellow Australian James Willett took the top step of the podium in Hangzhou after claiming the Trap Mixed Team gold medal in dominant fashion at the ISSF World Cup Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun event.
Smith and Willett produced a near-perfect qualification performance, shooting a mixed team qualification world record equalling score of 149 out of 150 targets.
This qualified them first overall in a field of 29 international teams.
In the trap mixed team final, the Aussie duo beat out the home favourite athletes from China, shooting a score of 37 out of 40 targets to claim the gold medal.
They also equalled the trap mixed teams finals world record set by James Willett and Catherine Skinner at the start of the month in Lonato, Italy.
Speaking with media after the event, Smith said it was a wonderful way to finish a five-week tour.
“It’s been an extremely hot week, so for us both to continue to shoot at such a high level is amazing.
“James shot excellently all day, only missing one target, but it was a team effort and something we’re both very proud of.”

Reflecting on who supported and contributed to her success in Hangzhou, Smith thanked her parents.
“My parents are always the backbone of my shooting and I have a great team around me that dedicate a lot of time, so to them I am very thankful.
“Thankyou to my teammates as well, we’ve had a great time in China.”
As well as winning gold in the trap mixed teams event, Smith also produced an outstanding result in the women’s trap competition, qualifying for the finals and finishing fourth overall.
“The competition level just keeps improving so much,” Smith said.
“But the time away always provides valuable lessons. I’m really happy with my performances across both World Cups and I’m looking forward to the rest of 2026.”
