Students recognise community in need

TWO Hampden P12 students strived to make a difference to the community last week when they noticed a portion of Colac’s population were homeless.

Middle Years students Miles Rogers and Kye Rumble were at their school swimming in Colac when they saw homeless people living on the street.

Wanting to make change, the boys got help from wellbeing officer Jen Finnerty to organise receiving donations of tents and clothes from local businesses to pass on to the Salvation Army.

“We noticed homeless people in Colac when we were going swimming on Tuesday,” Kye said.

“Our wellbeing officer Jen helped us.”

Both of the boys said they felt really good helping out their community and would want to do it again.

“We want to help out homeless people,” Miles said.

“I think we helped a lot of people.”

Colac Salvation Army ministry assistant Richard van Niekirk said it was great to have the students come and support community services.

“I think the concept where one of the boys saw a person in need then went back to the school and asked what they could do about it then got tents, food and clothes and brought them in is great,” he said.

“We were able to show them the venue and show them where we hand everything out to people so they were able to see where it goes.

“I think it’s that whole thing of having an idea of seeing something and needing to do something and making it happen.

“It’s a real blessing – I love that grassroots stuff.

“They feel they can do something and they did it and it helps us out which is great.”
