Two arrested following armed robbery

POLICE will allege two Camperdown men were involved in an armed robbery and violent assault arrests were made following a joint operation last week.

The men were arrested in Camperdown last Friday morning following the execution of search warrants in a joint operation between the Camperdown Police, Warrnambool District Response Unit and the Colac and Warrnambool Criminal Investigation Units.

Corangamite Senior Sergeant Bill Caldow said the men have been charged in relation to a burglary, an armed robbery and arson.

“In Colac last Monday night at approximately 9.30pm, an armed robbery is alleged to have occurred,” he said.

“Two offenders confronted a person in Pollack Street, Colac.

“We will allege a 22-year-old person was struck over the head with a hammer before their wallet and personal belongings were stolen in the armed robbery.

“The victim received injuries which required ambulance transfer and to be checked at the Colac Hospital.”

Snr Sgt Caldow said police would also allege one of the men had been involved in a recent car fire near Colac.

“A car fire was reported on the Princes Highway outside the site formerly known as the Koala Hotel,” he said.

“It was a good 50 metres off the highway – it was down on a track.

“Two Country Fire Authority tankers attended, but the car was completely destroyed by the fire.

“The vehicle was a Subaru WRX, which had been reported stolen last Monday.

Snr Sgt Caldow said one of the men police would allege was involved with the vehicle fire had also been an occupant in a vehicle which attempted to evade police in Camperdown last Thursday.

Snr Sgt Caldow said police had charged a 40-year-old Camperdown woman in relation to alleged evasion offences.

“On Thursday, July 3 at approximately 12.45am, Camperdown Police attempted to intercept a Holden Calais in Scott Street, Camperdown,” he said.

“The Calais refused to pull over, and police called in the offence of evading a police vehicle.

“The car was located a matter of seconds later in Russel Street in Camperdown, and the 40-year-old Camperdown driver was interviewed in relation to evading police.

“She’ll be charged on summons by Camperdown Police in relation to the evade.”

The two men were remanded to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday, July 7.

Snr Sgt Caldow said he hoped police activity in recent weeks would help to put a stop to poor driver behaviour in Camperdown.

“I’m hoping that recent arrests have put a stop to that,” he said.
