Whiskey trail tour
THE Whiskey Trail Tag Along Tour will return this weekend, inviting attendees to learn about local whiskey history while enjoying a taste.
Organiser Alan ‘Sarge’ Hart said the tour, which will run on Sunday, May 25 from 9.30am outside the Cobden Police Station, will take attendees through fine tastings and historical learnings before finishing with lunch in Boggy Creek.
“Travel to localities where men worked under cover of darkness to produce a great tasting but illicit whiskey,” he said.
“It was considered by many to be far superior to that being brought in from the mother country and subject to a high import tax.
“Hiding from authorities in wild country they knew so well and using their knowledge and skill to produce a fine drop that was available from Timboon to Koroit and all places in between during the 1880s and 1890s.”
A free tour handout will be given to attendees as they travel to Camperdown, the Camperdown Cemetery and onto the Terang Cemetery then across country and down south to the Brucknell Scout Camp.
From there it’s down to Whiskey Creek then to Delaney’s Corner and finishing at the Boggy Creek Hotel.
“En route tales, tall and true, will be passed on about this fine brew that many enjoyed as the authorities tried so hard to bring it to a close,” Mr Hart said.
“It’s a great part of our local history.
“Lunch will be available at the Boggy for those wishing to join in further stories and perhaps try an Irish whiskey.
“Whiskey trail books will be available for sale on the day for $22.”
